Oversize Windows of Monumental Dimension
There are occasions where in
the adaptive reuse of an historic building it is necessary to
make additions to an original design. Triple hung Royal Mahogany windows
were designed to fit behind the existing posts and fret work. The
result is a pleasing design that maintained the scope and size of
the original design. It added new life and vitality to a great
Victorian Building.
By placing the
windows behind the existing porch elements and purposely
selecting the heavier elements to the sash, the new windows are
in scale. Random pieces of hand drawn glass were used in the
glazing to compliment the fabric of the original windows in the
rest of the house.
This is a
successful adaptive reuse of a historic residence converted to a
commercial use. The Southern Mansion is a pleasant place to stay,
have breakfast and enjoy Cape May, New Jersey.
A retrospective look at old
technology can be interesting. There are very few balance systems
that can compete with weights, chains and pulleys for monumental
double hung windows. With proper selection of material and well
designed weather-stripping, this old technology will outperform
and outlast modern replacements.
